Thaipusam is a Hindu festival that takes place every year on the first full moon of the Tamil month of Thai, which comes in late January or February. In Peninsular Malaysia, it is a public holiday in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang, and Selangor.

Although it was previously observed as a public holiday; Thaipusam is not a gazetted holiday in the state of Kedah and classified as a public event. The public holiday was cancelled in 2021 since the public event (Thaipusam Festival) was not held due to the movement control order during COVID-19.

The public holiday was removed in Kedah due to COVID-19 and has since been reinstated.
